MDSolar Sciences: a review

Even though summer is almost over (say it isn’t so!), I have a new favorite sunscreen to share with you!

For most of my life, I haven’t been very good at remembering to apply sunscreen. I know, I know. But now that the threat of skin cancer and sun damage has sunk in, I’m trying to wear sunscreen every day.

I met a few of the ladies from MDSolarSciences at the Indie Beauty Expo and they graciously sent me a few of their products to try: the Mineral Moisture Defense SPF 50, the Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30, and the MD Crème Mineral Beauty Balm SPF 50.

Mineral Moisture Defense SPF 50

I. love. this. sunscreen. It is so smooth and blends right into my skin without any issues. It also made my skin feel so soft. Other natural sunscreens I’ve tried leave a white cast on my skin but this blends in so well; there was no white cast whatsoever. It has 2% Titanium Dioxide and 17% Zinc Oxide; both are great alternatives to chemicals found in more mainstream sunscreens.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates this sunscreen a 2 which is a great score. (The scale is 0-10, with 0 being the best and 10 being the worst.) The EWG added this sunscreen to their list of “Best Beach and Sport Sunscreens.” You can read more about this product on the EWG site.

This is by far my favorite natural sunscreen I’ve tried.

Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30

I really like this tinted crème for daily wear. As I mentioned in my post about my daily makeup routine, I don’t like to wear foundation every day, so this crème is right up my alley. The tint seems like a miraculous match for all skin tones and it blends in really well.

If you do like to wear a heavier foundation, then I wouldn’t recommend wearing it alone, but it definitely could be used as a makeup primer. It’s oil-free and has a matte finish so it’s a great first layer. I also think it would be perfect for a beach day when you want a quality sunscreen but don’t want to wear foundation over top of it. Like the moisture defense, it also contains 2% Titanium Dioxide and 17% Zinc Oxide.

The EWG rates this sunscreen a 1. The EWG added this sunscreen to their list of “Best Moisturizers with SPF.” You can read more about this product on the EWG site.

MD Crème Mineral Beauty Balm SPF 50

Frankly, I’m still unsure about this product. I really want to like it, but I’m on the fence. I love beauty balms and it’s the color of this crème that makes me hesitant. MDSolarSciences makes two colors of this product: light/medium and medium/dark. I have the light/medium and I think it may be just a tad too light for me. I have a feeling in the middle of winter it will be perfect.

I like the texture of this crème and it also blends in really well. It feels great on the skin and doesn’t feel oily at all. It too would be a good primer for makeup in case you like something heavier than BB cream.

The EWG rates this sunscreen a 1. The EWG added this sunscreen to their list of “Best Moisturizers with SPF.” You can read more about this product on the EWG site.

In case you’re looking for a new sunscreen or tinted moisturizer, I would definitely recommend both the Mineral Moisture Defense SPF 50 and the Mineral Tinted Crème SPF 30. If you try them out, let me know!
